School Profiles
Name: Nowabad Girls School, located
in Dashti Qala
Location:
Nowabad Girls School is
located on northern outskirts of Dashti Qala, near the
border with Tajikistan. The nearest large city, Rustaq
is approximately 1 1/2 hours away; the provincial capital,
Taloqan, is 7 1/2 hours away. The school is located
off a main dirt road, leading from the mountains into
the valley of Dashti Qala. Dashti Qala, Dashti Qala
District, Takhar Province

- Number of students: 543 students
- Grade level of students: grades
1 - 5, ages 7 - 16
- Composition of student body:
All girls - The majority
of students are Uzbeks and Dari-speakers.
- Teachers: Nowabad
Girls School employs sixteen teachers (ten male teachers),
many of who studied at universities in Konduz and
Mazar-I-Sharif.
History:
Principal
Faizu Rahman established the school two years ago in
a temporary location in a neaby boys' school. It was
not until Relief International built a new campus that
the Nowabad Girls School was officially registered with
the Afghan Ministry of Education.
Subjects taught: Grades
1 - 5: Pashtu, mathematics, geometry, science, history
and geography
Sanitation facilities: one
well, ten latrines
Special needs:
School
officials expressed a need for an additional well, a
higher security wall and classroom furniture.
Current situation:
The student body comprises of local villagers and does
not include any refugees or returnees. Many of the girls
had schooled previously in a coeducational facility.
