Aikhanum Primary School, located in
Dashti Qala
Location:
Aikhanum Primary School is located due east of the city
center of Dashti Qala, near the border with Tajikistan.
The nearest large city, Rustaq is approximately 1 1/2
hours away; the provincial capital, Taloqan, is 7 1/2
hours away. Dashti Qala, Dashti Qala District, Takhar
Province

- Ethnic composition of students:
60% Uzbek, 20% Tajik,
20% Pashtun
- Number of teachers: The
school employs twelve teachers.
History:
Aikhanum Primary School
was established eight years ago in a different location
in Dashti Qala. One year ago, the Taliban bombarded
the school grounds, and the school relocated to its
present locatoin. Once again, the Taliban destroyed
the school facilities. After Relief International rebuilt
the school, it officially reopened seven months ago.
Subjects taught:
- Grades 1 - 3: Dari, mathematics,
drawing and sports
- Grades 4 - 6: Dari, Pashtu,
mathematics, geometry, science, history, geography
and drawing.
Schedule:
The
school operates from 7 am until 10:30 am, six days a
week.
Sanitation facilities: one
well, five latrines
Special needs:
School
officials expressed a need for a deeper well, additional
latrines, a security wall around the school compound
and a separate girls' school.
Current situation:
Approximately
10 of the 360 students are returnees. The majority of
students are enrolled in grade 1, which has two classes
of girls and four classes of boys.
