Boidingak
Primary School, located in Dashti Qala
Location:
Aikhanum
Primary School is located due east of the city center
of Dashti Qala, near the border with Tajikistan. The
nearest large city, Rustaq is approximately 1 1/2 hours
away; the provincial capital, Taloqan, is 7 1/2 hours
away. Dashti Qala, Dashti Qala District, Takhar Province
- Principal:
Janat Gul, teacher and acting Principal
- Number
of students: 120 students
- Grade
level of students: grade 1, ages 6 - 11
- Composition
of student body: 40
girls, 80 boys. The majority of students are Uzbeks
and Pashtu-speakers.
- Number
of teachers: The
school employs three teachers from Dashti Qala.
History:
Boidingak
Primary School was destroyed by Russian troops 13 years
after its initial inception 36 years ago. The school
remained closed until Relief International began reconstruction
in December 2001.
Subjects
taught: Dari, mathematics
Schedule:
The school operates from 7 am until 10 am, six days
a week.
Sanitation
facilities: one
well, five latrines
Special
needs:
School
official expressed a need for a security wall around
the school compound, a pump for the well and classroom
furniture.
Current
situation:
The
majority of the students live in nearby neighborhoods
of Dashti Qala; some student are returnees from Pakistan.
If enrollment continues to increase, school officials
plan to start grade 2 next year. The acting Principal,
Janat Gul, is a former student of Boidingak Primary
School.
