School Profiles
Boys School, located in Taloqan
Location:
The Boys School is located
in the heart of the provincial capital, Taloqan. Taloqan
is approximately 1 1/2 hours drive from Kunduz City,
accessible by UN flights. The drive from Taloqan to
Kabul takes approximately nine hours, weather-permitting.

- Number of students: 3711 students
- Grade level of students: grades
1 - 6, ages 7 - 12
- Ethnic composition:
- 70% Tajik, 20% Uzbek, 10% Pashtun
Number of teachers:
To meet the increased demand, the Boys School recruited
ten new teachers, all of whom are former refugees, to
bring the total number of teachers to sixty.
History:
Established 37 years ago,
the Boys School of Taloqan was damaged by Taliban forces,
who burned the roof and tore down classroom doors. During
the Taliban regime, ten of the original fifty teachers
ran the school out of a private location. Relief International
rebuilt the school, with roofing materials donated by
Mercy Corps, and the Boys School officially reopened
8 months ago.
Subjects taught:
- Grades 1 - 4: Dari, mathematics
and drawing
- Grades 5 - 6 : Dari, Pashtu,
mathematics, science, history, geography and drawing
Schedule:
The
school is organized into three shifts: grade 1 (7:30
am - 10 am), grades 1 - 3 (10 am - 1 pm) and grades
4 - 6 (1 pm - 5 pm)
Sanitation facilities: one
well, eleven latrines
Special needs:
School
officials expressed a need for classroom furniture and
educational materials.
Current situation:
The
majority of the approximately 2900 new students who
enrolled in the Boys School in 2002 entered into grade
1. As a result, there are more than 21 classes of grade
1.
